No News is Good News

So you probably noticed that I didn't post anything new yesterday. That's because the fire has burned so far back into the Cleveland Nation Forest that you can't see any flames. Sure, there's lots of smoke and ash in the valley, but that's about it.

One thing I've noticed about the fires is that you can tell when it's 5am, 4pm and 11pm because all the news helicopters fly over the house on their way to Santiago Canyon. As a matter of fact, all those firefighting aircraft that our Assemblyman, Todd Spitzer, was complaining about not being here earlier in the week have finally showed up. They're refilling the helicopters via hose and bucket inthe Upper Oso Resevoir. It's pretty cool to see them swoop down, suck the water out of the lake and then take off within a matter of 3 or 4 minutes. They've been taking so much water to fight the fires that you can actually see the level of the lake going down. They've also got the super scoopers refilling out in the ocean and the DC-10 that drops the Phos-Check fire retardant on the front lines.

So right now the fire is about 1/2 mile away from the Riverside County line. That also puts it only 3 miles away from the I-15. (That's as the crow flies) The OC Register is reporting that if the weather holds they expect the fire to be contained by Tuesday morning. There are still mandatory evacuations in Silverado and Modjeska canyons with, believe it or not, voluntary evacuations in Foothill Ranch and Portola Hills, although, I'm not sure what's left to burn towards our areas. I guess embers can still travel a long way, and the smoke is still definately an issue.

If you want more detail, here's the latest from the OC Register.
